As we gather to support the vital work of Akron Snow Angels, Susan Flowers opens with a poignant letter written by one of the many men and women they assist each winter. This letter is a raw, unfiltered glimpse into the daily struggles faced by those without stable housing in our community—a reality that underscores why our support is so critical. “I check the homeless helper Facebook page to see that there is a free concert at one of the churches so I will get warm for a few hours. I will also try to apply for some jobs but the first question is my address and phone number. I got neither of those. Dinner at the Peter Lawrence Center on S. Main. Three miles each way but I'm still grateful. Off to the concert at Trinity Lutheran then to my encampment. I crawl into my sleeping bag hoping that no one tries to come after me in this confined position and hoping this won't be the night the police tell me to move on. Funny they tell me I can't stay where I am but they never tell me where I should go. The ground is damp and hard and cold under the sleeping bag but it is home and I finally fall asleep exhausted from my full time job of trying to stay alive.”
This deeply moving account reminds us of the impact Akron Snow Angels has on individuals who are often unseen and unheard. Together, we can bring hope, warmth, and compassion to those in need. Let this letter inspire us to take action and make a difference in their lives.
